Walking through the kitchen door as a teen my mother would sometimes ask, “So what have you done today for God and country?” That rhetorical question from my mother takes on a special meaning for me on this ride.
The success of this ride is very important to the Catholic Diocese of Belize City-Belmopan, but it is also very important to the nation of Belize. The Diocese operates 112 primary schools, the government operates 59. The lion’s share of primary education falls squarely on the shoulders of the Diocese with its 27,000 students. If the Church fails in her educational responsibility, the nation feels that failure most acutely. The Government of Belize does her part by spending roughly one-quarter of its budget on education. The Catholic Church of Belize cannot blame the Government of Belize for her failures. We Catholics need to meet our responsibilities. We Catholics must step up. We must step up for our 27,000 students; we must step up for God and country.
