Beware the Coffee Buzz. It’s How The Ride Began.

Maya-Mountains-Belize

Beware the coffee buzz, especially on a sunny day cruising through the Maya Mountains. That little caffeine high might just push you over the edge of normal self-restraint and get you thinking you can do the improbable, the implausible, and maybe even the impossible. The idea of my being able to raise $5 million dollars came from the coffee cup and the shining sun. But who knows the ways of providence?

Perhaps God saw that I needed a little jolt to get His will done; and I do confess, the educational welfare of 32,000 children would be something of a concern for the Divine, otherwise what am I doing with my life? And so…The Lighthouse Ride.

The Lighthouse Ride in itself is less a fundraiser than a hook, a conversation starter: …See the old priest bicycle across the USA….Why is he doing that?… He says to bring attention to the Catholic Primary Schools of Belize…Where’s Belize?…What’s wrong with their schools?’…And so on…

There can be no question that between parish churches, parish grade schools, lunches, dinners, gatherings, and most especially while on the road I will meet thousands of human beings. So the Lighthouse Ride suddenly becomes an effort in evangelization as well as a fundraising effort. But before all that can happen in under a year, I need to get my 65-year-old butt in shape.
