Lighthouse Hike for Belize…by Kimberly Meyer

Many days I have felt like Sisyphus, endlessly rolling my boulder uphill only to struggle near the top and watch it avalanche back down again. My friends wrestle with dozens of other boulders, struggling as I am.

In the shock and horror of the past year, I have been in discernment, asking God, “What would You have me do, here, now?”

I looked for guidance from my Ignatian spiritual guide, my friends, my pastor, former pastors, the local Jesuit provincial  Fr. Derrick, and, former pastor of St. Francis Xavier, Fr. Matt Ruhl, SJ.

Twenty years ago, my son, Joshua, and I met Fr. Matt when we were shopping for a church with a more diverse community where “Welcome” truly included all. We chose SFX, because the community was welcoming, engaging, and kind. Fr. Matt’s leadership was human and approachable, and his charismatic passion for God and social justice captivated us. He was filled with fire and exuded Joy. Joshua said, “Momma, I think we just found our church.”

Fr. Matt remains an anchor in my son’s spirituality and in mine, even though Fr. Matt moved to Belize 15 years ago. This past December, Fr. Matt guest presided at SFX and shared the intimacy of God’s touch in his life — in all our lives. Fr. Matt continues his battle for justice for all, now as the head of the schools in Belize.

Shortly after meeting with Fr. Matt, I heard God say, “Do this one small thing. It will make a difference.”

In March, I am raising money for Belize schools by backpacking the 240 miles of the Katy Trail. The money will help rebuild crumbling or condemned schoolrooms that are still used because nowhere else is available. https://lighthouseridebelize.org/the-need/

Lighthouse funds will transform buildings, thus improving the lives of Belizean children. It will provide a small light, a small proof of unexpected love and compassion.
